Shooting Safety

Safety, Education & Responsible Marksmanship

Firearm safety is a set of habits, not a single rule. These fundamentals are taught in every association program and repeated at every range day.

Four fundamentals · Every session

Firearm Safety Fundamentals

The habits that prevent accidents are simple and repeatable. Every HRA program begins with the same fundamentals.

  • Treat every firearm as loaded
  • Keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction
  • Keep your finger off the trigger until ready
  • Know your target and what lies beyond it

Safe Range Practices

Range discipline protects everyone on the line. Understanding commands and clear procedures keeps sessions calm and predictable.

  • Follow range officer commands immediately
  • Keep actions open and unloaded behind the line
  • Never handle firearms during a ceasefire
  • Eye and ear protection at all times

Youth Safety Education

Young people benefit from clear, age-appropriate instruction and supervised introduction to marksmanship.

  • Supervised instruction only
  • Age-appropriate equipment and distances
  • Emphasis on discipline and responsibility
  • Parental involvement at every step

Responsible Firearm Ownership

Responsible ownership extends beyond the range — safe storage and thoughtful handling at home protect the people you care about.

  • Secure storage away from children
  • Separate ammunition storage
  • Regular review of household safety plans
  • Know Hawaii transport requirements

The Four Rules

  1. 1Treat every firearm as if it were loaded.
  2. 2Always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction.
  3. 3Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot.
  4. 4Know your target and what lies beyond it.

Youth Safety Education

Young people are naturally curious about firearms. Supervised, structured education answers that curiosity safely. Youth programs always involve parental consent, close instructor supervision and age-appropriate equipment.

Families who are unsure where to begin can contact the association for guidance on introductory programs on their island.

Responsible Ownership at Home

Responsible ownership continues after you leave the range. Secure storage, separate ammunition storage and a clear household plan protect the people you live with.

  • Store firearms locked and inaccessible to children
  • Keep ammunition in a separate secured location
  • Review your plan whenever your household changes
  • Confirm current Hawaii transport requirements before traveling

Bring safety education to your club or family
